You leave the Zona Colonial and drive 176 km, about 3 h 43 min, to Duarte province. The reserve is about 15 km from San Francisco de Macorís.
The Reserva Científica Loma Quita Espuela protects about 72.5 km² of the Cordillera Septentrional, and its summit reaches 985 meters. It was created by Decree 82-92, from 1992, ratified by Law 64-00, and is run by the Fundación Loma Quita Espuela.

51 bird species have been reported, five Anolis lizards and endemic mammals like the solenodon and the hutia.
The sendero de las Nubes, the Cloud Trail, climbs to the summit, with a view of the Cibao Valley. From the south, the climb takes about three hours.
Inside the reserve there's a restaurant serving traditional Dominican food, and you can stay at Rancho Don Lulú, a small farm run by a family that lives there.
