The Zona Colonial is Santo Domingo's historic center: about 106 hectares by the Ozama River.
It's the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the Americas, and UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 1990.
Here is the Catedral de Santa María la Menor, the oldest cathedral on the continent.
It was begun in 1514 and consecrated in 1541.
You can walk all of it, and at night the area stays lively.
A few blocks away is the Fortaleza Ozama, part of the city walls.
There's also the Alcázar de Colón, from 1514. The Puerta del Conde and the ruins of the Monasterio de San Francisco round out the walk.
You can walk all of it: plazas, museums, cafés and restaurants in colonial houses.
And when night falls, the area stays lively.
