Santiago de los Caballeros is the country's second most populous city: 771,748 people in the municipality, according to the 2022 census. It's in the Cibao Valley, on the banks of the Yaque del Norte River.
It was founded in 1495. After an earthquake, it was refounded in 1562 on the site where it stands today.

Start with the Monumento a los Héroes de la Restauración: 67 meters of marble, with a lookout. It was begun in 1944 on Trujillo's orders and reopened in 2007, after a renovation.
There's also the Centro León, opened in 2003, with cultural exhibitions.
The Catedral de Santiago Apóstol dates from 1895 and holds a copy of Michelangelo's Pietà.
The city exports rum, textiles and cigars, and you can tour cigar factories. Aurora is one of those still running.
Look for traditional Cibao cooking.
And order a yaroa: fries or mashed plantain or yuca, with meat and cheese on top. It was born in Santiago around 1999, at the stands in El Ejido and around the Monumento.
There's live music too: merengue típico and bachata.
