You leave the Zona Colonial heading east and drive 109 km, about 1 h 34 min, to the southeast coast, facing Isla Catalina.
Punta Cana is about 45 minutes farther east. The city has an international airport and a cruise port.
In 2022 it had 153,241 people. Its economy runs on sugar, with the Central Romana mill since 1917, and on tourism.
Its marina was designed to look like Portofino.
Casa de Campo is a residential and resort complex developed in the seventies. It has three Pete Dye golf courses; the oldest, Teeth of the Dog, opened in 1971.
Its marina, finished in 2000, has 400 slips and was designed to look like Portofino. Around it are more than 70 restaurants, shops, bars and homes.
Altos de Chavón is a recreation of a Mediterranean village above the Chavón River, started in 1976. It has an archaeology museum, a design school and restaurants.
Its amphitheater, for more than 5,000 people, opened in 1982 with a concert by Frank Sinatra and Carlos Santana.
