You leave the Zona Colonial and drive 109 km, about 1 h 34 min, to La Romana. Boats leave from there every day, and the trip takes half an hour.
There are also trips from Casa de Campo, Bayahíbe and Dominicus. Cruise ships use the island as a stop, but the beach is open to the public.
Isla Catalina is an uninhabited island of about 9.6 km², 2.4 km off the coast of La Romana. It's listed as a natural monument.
Christopher Columbus named it Santa Catalina in May 1494.
It has white sand beaches, dunes and mangroves, and it's ringed by living coral reefs.
El Muro is a coral wall a few meters from shore.
People come here to snorkel and dive. The best-known spots are El Muro, a coral wall a few meters from shore, and El Acuario.
About 70 meters off the coast lies the wreck of the Quedagh Merchant, Captain William Kidd's ship, from 1699. It was found on December 13, 2007, with 26 cannons.
Indiana University set up a marine protected area around it, called the Museo Vivo del Mar.
