You leave the Zona Colonial and drive 265 km, about 4 h 3 min. The lagoon sits a short way off Highway 44, between Barahona and Pedernales.
The boats leave from the El Cajuil visitor center, on the north shore.
The tours are run by the Asociación de Guías de la Laguna de Oviedo, with local guides trained in ecotourism.
There's a short trip, one hour, to see flamingos. The full one takes 2 to 2.5 hours and reaches the Cayo de las Iguanas, home of the rhinoceros iguana. Ricord's iguana also lives in the lagoon.

About 150 bird species have been recorded. Besides the flamingo, you'll see spoonbills, herons and the West Indian whistling duck (yaguasa).
Flamingos are easiest to see in the winter months, though some stay all year.
